அமராவதி அணையிலிருந்து பழைய ஆயக்கட்டு பாசனத்துக்காக, நேற்று தண்ணீர் திறக்கப்பட்டது. தென்மேற்கு பருவமழை சரியான நேரத்தில் துவங்கியதால், அணைக்கு நீர் வரத்து அதிகரித்ததால், நீர் மட்டம் உயர்ந்தது. சாகுபடி பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ள பழைய ஆயக்கட்டு பாசனத்துக்கு தண்ணீர் திறக்க வேண்டும் என விவசாயிகள், அரசுக்கு கோரிக்கை வைத்தனர். இதையடுத்து, பழைய ஆயக்கட்டு பாசனத்துக்கு தண்ணீர் திறக்க அரசு உத்தரவிட்டது. இதன்படி, நேற்று காலை 9.30 மணிக்கு தொழில்துறை அமைச்சர் சண்முகவேலு, அணையிலிருந்து கீழ் மதகுகளை திறந்தார். மதகுகள் வழியாக ஆற்றில் பாசனத்துக்கு தண்ணீர் கரைபுரண்டோடியது. நேற்றைய நிலவரப்படி, அணையின் நீர்மட்டம் 51 அடியாக இருந்தது.

திண்டுக்கலில் இருந்து கோவை - சக்தி வழியாக பெங்களூருக்கு, தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலை(எண்.209) ரோட்டை விரிவுபடுத்துவது குறித்த கருத்துக் கேட்பு கூட்டம், உடுமலையில் நடந்தது. கூட்டத்திற்கு, தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலைத்துறை ஆணைய திட்ட அலுவலர் மணிவண்ணன் தலைமை வகித்து பேசியதாவது: மதுரையிலிருந்து கோவை செல்லும் வாகனங்கள் செம்பட்டி, தாராபுரம் பல்லடம் வழியாகச் செல்லும் மாநில நெடுஞ்சாலையை அதிகளவு பயன்படுத்துகின்றன. இதனால், நெரிசலும் விபத்துகளும் அதிகரிக்கின்றன. இந்த ரோட்டில் செல்லும் வாகனங்களின் எண்ணிக்கையைக் குறைக்க, தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலை 209ஐ மேம்படுத்த வேண்டியுள்ளது. இந்த ரோடு சத்தியமங்கலம் வழியாக, பெங்களூரு வரை செல்கிறது. நான்கு மாவட்டங்களைக் கடந்து செல்லும் இந்த ரோட்டில் நடத்திய சர்வே அடிப்படையில், சில இடங்களில் இருவழிச்சாலையாகவும், பிற இடங்களில் நான்குவழிச் சாலையாகவும் மாற்ற கருத்துரு தயாரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. திட்டத்தின்படி, ஏழு இடங்களில் ரயில்வே கிராசிங் உள்ளது. குடியிருப்புகள் அதிகம் இடிக்கப்பட வேண்டிய நிலையை தவிர்க்க, குறிப்பிட்ட சில நகரங்களுக்கு பை-பாஸ் அமைக்கப்படும். அனைத்து நகரங்களிலும் கருத்து கேட்பு கூட்டங்கள் நடத்தப்பட்டு மக்களின் கோரிக்கை மத்திய அரசுக்கு அனுப்பப்படும். அடுத்தகட்டமாக நிலம் கையகப்படுத்துதல் போன்ற பணிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு அடுத்தாண்டில் டெண்டர் விடப்படும் வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலையில் குறுக்கிடும் பாலங்கள், பை-பாஸ் தேவையான நகரங்கள் போன்ற பிரச்னைகள் தொடராமல் இருக்க, முழு தீர்வாக அடுத்து மேற்கொள்ளும் திட்டம் இருக்கும். இவ்வாறு, அவர் பேசினார். 45 ஆயிரம் மரங்கள் வெட்டப்படும் :தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலை மேம்பாட்டில், பத்து நகரங்களுக்கு பை-பாஸ் அமைக்க திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இத்திட்டத்திற்காக 883 எக்டேர் நிலம் கையகப்படுத்த வேண்டியதிருக்கும். இதில், மடத்துக்குளம் பை-பாஸ் ரோட்டில் அமராவதி ஆற்றின் குறுக்கே பெரிய பாலம் கட்டப்படும். திண்டுக்கலில் இருந்து கோவை வரை, 149 கி.மீ., நான்குவழிப் பாதையும், இரண்டாம் கட்டமாக சரவணம்பட்டியிலிருந்து அன்னூர் வரை நான்கு வழிப்பாதையும், அன்னூரிலிருந்து கர்நாடக மாநில எல்லை வரை 98 கி.மீ., நீளத்திற்கு இருவழிப் பாதையாக மேம்படுத்தப்படும். நான்கு இடங்களில் வசூல் வரிமையங்களும், மூன்று இடங்களில் கனரக வாகனங்கள் நிறுத்தும் மையங்களும் அமைக்கப்படும். பரிந்துரைகளின் அடிப்படையில், நான்குவழிச் சாலை மற்றும் பை-பாஸ் ரோடு அமைக்கப்பட்டால் பணிகளுக்காக 45 ஆயிரம் மரங்கள் வெட்டப்படும். இவ்வாறு பரிந்துரையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Siruthuli is a NGO working to reclaim polluted urban water bodies and give them a fresh lease of life. It also has a master with large scale rainwater harvesting, solid waste management, afforestation program
and sewage water treatment.

It is managed by a board of trustees of very eminent people from this area.

Posting this blog after a long time :) ..

Coimbatore is back in news with the Tidel park coming up soon ..

The first phase of the construction works for TIDEL Park i.e., the three basement floors and a ground floor will be ready by September-end while the remaining three floors will be ready by December 2009, said Collector P. Umanath, here on Saturday.

Dr. Umanath along with Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister, Pongalur N. Palanisamy and officials from the Mumbai-based construction firm B.E. Billimoria and Company reviewed the pace of construction work on Avanashi Road near the Hope College.

The construction of the 17 lakh sq ft complex at an outlay of Rs. 370 crore began on September 10, 2008.

Later speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Umanath said that three basement floors and a ground floor for usage by Commercial, Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled service firms would be ready by September-end. In respect of the remaining four floors the work would be over by December 2009 as per schedule.

Wind energy - Coimbatore leads the pack ..

Evacuation of wind energy generated from wind mills in Coimbatore district will be almost 100 per cent now as the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has created the requisite additional infrastructure.

A 200 MVA sub-station at Ponnapuram (near Dharapuram), four feeder stations and the required transmission lines are some of the works completed during the last six months

At the function, the chairman of the board, Hans Raj Verma, assured the wind mill operators that investments in the State would yield better returns as Tamil Nadu had the potential for wind energy generation and the board would provide adequate infrastructure for evacuation of the energy generated.

The member (generation), S.Arounassalame, said that efforts were initiated last September to create the required infrastructure. The works were completed with the support of wind turbine manufacturers and wind energy producers. By the end of December this year he was hopeful of completing the measures taken up in Tirunelvelli and Kanyakumari areas too to achieve complete evacuation of wind energy generated in those areas.

The chief engineer of the board, Coimbatore, S. Shanmuganandam, said with complete evacuation of the wind energy generated in this area, availability of power would improve. The capacity created now would also be able to take care of the new wind mills that were expected to be installed in the district in the next one year. Another sub-station of 200 MVA at Palladam was likely to be completed by this October.

The association chairman, P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha, said wind mill installations saw significant growth during the last two or three years. Tamil Nadu had about 50 per cent of the total wind mill installed capacity of 7,113 MW in the country. Of the 3,476 MW installed capacity in the State, 1,373 MW was in Coimbatore district. Wind electric generators should operate to the maximum possible extent during the windy season. Only with adequate sub-station capacity and transmission line capacity could there be full evacuation of the energy generated.

Marudhamalai Temple

Welcome you all to my first post of 2007. One of the things i have planned for this year to do some good blogging in this site. This is one of the topics i was planning to write for a long time, bit delayed as i was searching for enough material. Always anything related to Hindu God Lord Muruga is closely associated with "Siddhar". So from this article i am planing to write something about those great souls who lived in this bhoomi.

Ok .. let start with famous Maruthamalai temple in Coimbatore. Marudhamalai Hills Arulmigu Subramanyaswamy Temple is situated at a height of about 500 feet in a plateau on the Western Ghats, fifteen kilometers north west of Coimbatore, amidst lush vegetation and salubrious climate.

The Sanskrit word "achalam" denotes mountain. As the mountain here abounded in marudham trees, it came to be known as Marudhachalam. Marudhamalai is also called Marundhumalai, for it is overgrown with shrubs and bushes of medicinal properties. Hence, Marudhamalai is befittingly given the name Marudhamalai (Mountain of Medicines). This is referred to as Marudhamalvarai, Marudhavarai, Marudha Verpu, Marudha Kundru, Marudhavôngal, Kamarpirangu, Marudhachalam, Velvarai in Perur Puranam.

Standing at the foot hill, as we gaze towards the north, in the distant hills, we discern three stones in diverse colours, which are the petrified form of three thieves cursed by Lord Muruga for their sinful act of plundering the treasures belonging to the temple. Just below the stone forms, there is a flat stone which, it is said, is but the jewel box stolen by the thieves. It is said Lord Muruga came in the guise of cavalier, chased and punished them.

The deities are all of spontaneous origin (swayambhu) of Lord Subramanya with His two consorts, Valli and Teyvannai. Currently this temple is managed by Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

Athirampallys falls

This is the one of the best places in this area. It is featured in almost all the films and advertisements

Athirampallys falls or "Punnagaimannan" Falls in about 36 Km from Sholaiyar, Kerla. Not sure whether this place is is exactly in TN or Kerala but you can reach from both the states. I visited this falls from a place called "Kaddaam Parai" near Pollachi.

The water falls from a height of nearly 60m. The road journey from Kaddamprai to Athirampally falls is quite adventurous, where one can witness several wild species on the way. The river lies along the road and this is surely going to be an exciting journey because words cannot describe its mystic beauty nor films fully capture its incredible variety.

Recently visited Google maps and gave a wild search for Google maps (last time, i went to it i could see only the landscape of this area at a very high level). But this time to my surprise Coimbatore is mapped by Google at a very good level. You can see the roads of the city, but one needs to be a expert map reader or should have a good knowledge about the city the identify the place correctly. It does not take street level in search (i.e PSG Tech, Coimbatore) similar to a location in USA.

But a definite improvement over the past and thanks to Google on this service.

COIMBATORE: Siruthuli, a public initiative for conservation of water sources, has formed an advisory committee to implement a project for reviving the Noyyal here.

The nine-member committee has experts from non-governmental organisations, the Public Works Department, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and Bharathiar University. They visited Kooduthurai, the origin of the river, on Saturday. They went along its course to study the condition of the river along with Vanita Mohan, managing trustee of Siruthuli.

Ms. Mohan told reporters that the first phase of revival, from Kooduthurai to Singanallur tank in the city (40 km), would be in two stages. The first would be up to Perur. Till this point the river was clean.

Beyond this, effluents and sewage polluted the river. Siruthuli planned to revive the entire 160-km river course up to Noyyal in Erode where it joins the Cauvery. `Noyyalukku Nooru', a fund-raising programme, had helped to mobilise Rs.60 lakh.

The committee consists of K. Elangovan, Superintending Engineer of the Public Works Department's Water Resources Organisation, Coimbatore; K. Palanisamy, Director, the Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development for Students, TNAU; R.K. Sivanappan, former university faculty and water expert; Laxmana Perumal Samy of Bharathiar University; D.K. Manavalan, Executive Director, Action for Food Production, New Delhi; C. Vijayakumar of AFPRO; K.M. Namboodiri, Senior Technical Advisor of AREED; C. Udayashankar, Advisor of Natural Resources Management, Centre for World Solidarity; Joe S. D'Souza of Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems; and A. Raja Mohammed, a Karaikudi-based geophysicist.

Mr. Elangovan said the PWD would install water gauges at various points to assess the flow. The river's boundaries on either side would be marked. Encroachments had been removed with Siruthuli's help.

Mr. Namboodiri said there was a long gap between the previous study on the river (conducted in the late 1970s) and what was being done now. Many activities detrimental to the river had happened. Serious intervention was possible only after the data was collected. The idea of involving the community would be discussed.

Mr. Namboodiri said Siruthuli must start advising policy makers on water use and conservation. The Noyyal project was "not an exercise based on emotions but was a scientific approach."

Mr. Udayashankar said groundwater should be made common property to curb excess drawal by individuals. A State water policy would provide guidelines for community use of water.

Mr. Manavalan said time was ripe to involve the community in the project. Ms. Mohan said those who used more water had the responsibility of replenishment. The success of the first stage would inspire the second one that required a different strategy to tackle pollution.
